Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) refers to a group of linoleic acid isomers with conjugated double bonds. The predominant isomers being c9,t11 CLA and t10,c12 CLA. Various mechanisms for the weight loss effects of CLA have been suggested with increased lipid peroxidation being at least partly responsible. CLA also decreased plasma leptin and increased basal energy expenditure and PPAR-gamma mRNA expression.
