A member of a family of vitamin B-like substances collectively known as inositol. However, unlike conventional inositol, d-chiro-inositol is an important secondary messenger in insulin signal transduction. This means it improves the body’s cellular responses to insulin, making it useful for insulin resistant conditions such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes, in men and women. It is also useful for PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) in women. d-Chiro-inositol may also promote weight loss and boost energy levels in individuals resistant to weight loss, caused by insulin resistance.
D-chiro-inositol is a member of a family of vitamin B-like substances collectively known as inositol. However, unlike conventional inositol, d-chiro-inositol seems to play a greater role in insulin signal transduction. This may explain the improved cellular response to insulin, making it useful for assisting insulin resistant conditions such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes, in men and women. It may also be useful as part of the treatment for PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) in women.
Each capsule contains the following as active ingredient:
Inactive ingredients: Hypromellose (cellulose) vegetarian capsule shell (gelatin free), microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate (vegetarian – flow agent), magnesium silicate, silicon dioxide and colloidal silicon dioxide.Contains plant extracts and natural fillers, with no colourants added – therefore the colour of the capsule contents may vary slightly from batch to batch.
Store in a cool dry place below 25°C. Keep out of the reach of children.
D-chiro-inositol is a sterioisomer of inositol found in the body. Researchers think that D-chiro-inositol isomer supports ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome by improving insulin sensitivity. Reduced insulin resistance is also thought to be responsible for supporting the improvement of other symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and increased serum testosterone concentrations. Additionally, individuals with insulin resistance, including those with impaired glucose tolerance and type 2 diabetes, might have D-chiro-inositol deficiency.
Adults and children over 12 years of age: Take 1-2 capsules twice daily with or shortly after meals.
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you are on any medication or suffering from any medical condition, it is advisable to seek medical advice before starting any new medicine, supplement or remedy.
Safety in children has not been established.
Side effects may include nausea, tiredness, headache and dizziness.
There are no known contraindications.
Diabetic medications: D-chiro-Inositol may enhance the effectiveness of diabetic medicines, which may require an adjustment in dosage.
Carbamazepine: Carbemazepine reduces inositol levels in the brain, probably by inhibiting an enzyme involved in inositol synthesis.
Lithium: Lithium reduces inositol levels in the brain by inhibiting the inositol monophosphatase enzyme. The effect of lithium on brain inositol might contribute to its therapeutic effects in bipolar disorder. Use this combination with caution.
Valproic acid: Valproic acid reduces inositol levels in the brain by inhibiting the inositol phosphate synthase enzyme, which is involved in synthesis of inositol. The effect of valproic acid on brain inositol might contribute to its therapeutic effects in bipolar disorder.
Bipolar disorder: There is some concern that excessive consumption of inositol might exacerbate bipolar disorder.
