Magnesium is an essential mineral for healthy heart and muscle function. Up to 75% of the population are magnesium deficient. Magnesium is also useful for brain and nervous system function, and helps relieve anxiety. Magnesium may also help improve symptoms in children with ADD. Magnesium is involved in energy supply and may be of benefit for athletes or individuals suffering from chronic fatigue. Magnesium improves insulin and glucose control, and may help in treating metabolic syndrome. Magnesium is helpful in reducing the symptoms of PMS in women. Magnesium supplementation is specifically indicated for individuals taking the following medications which cause magnesium depletion: beta-agonists (asthma medication), estrogen containing oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, digoxin, diuretics (except potassium sparing diuretics) and cortisone medications (corticosteroids). The following groups of people are at particular risk of low magnesium levels and should supplement with magnesium: diabetics, the elderly and people who drink a lot of alcohol. Magnesium glycinate is the most bioavailable and absorbable form of magnesium and the least likely to cause diarrhoea as a side effect.
Many South African diets are largely deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is present in all cells in the body and is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes, including energy production. Some of magnesium’s other roles include maintaining normal bone density, heart rhythm, lung function and blood glucose regulation. The risk of magnesium deficiency is increases with age, in diabetics and with high alcohol consumption.
Each tablet contains the following as active ingredients:

Magnesium plays an essential role in more than 300 cellular reactions. Magnesium is required for the formation of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and is involved in ion movements across cell membranes. It is involved in protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism. Extracellular magnesium is important in both maintaining nerve and muscle electrical potentials and transmitting impulses across neuromuscular junctions. Cardiac function is strongly influenced by electrolyte concentrations and some cardiac arrhythmias may be associated with magnesium deficiency. Magnesium glycinate is a highly bioavailable and absorbable form of magnesium.
Adults and children over 7 years of age: Take half to 1 tablet twice daily.
Children 4-7 years of age: Take half a tablet daily.
Take with or shortly after meal(s).
Magnesium should generally be avoided in individuals with severe renal impairment and heart block.
Do not exceed recommended dosages unless on the advice of a health care provider.
Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.

Side effects may include gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. High doses exceeding the recommended dosage can result in low blood pressure, muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat.
Vitamin D: Vitamin D assists in the absorption of magnesium. Low levels of vitamin D may thus lead to reduced absorption of magnesium.
Biphosphonates: Magnesium can decrease the absorption of biphosphonates. Doses of magnesium and biphosphonates should be separated by at least 2 hours.
Calcium channel blockers: Magnesium could have an added blood pressure lowering effect. Use with caution especially if taking high doses of magnesium.
Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids increase urinary magnesium excretion.
Potassium sparing diuretics: These diuretics are also magnesium sparing potentially leading to increased levels with concomitant magnesium supplementation.
Quinolone antibiotics: Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with quinolone antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take these medicines at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium.
Tetracycline antibiotics: Magnesium can form insoluble complexes with tetracycline antibiotics leading to reduced absorption. Individuals should take these medicines at least two hours before or four to six hours after magnesium.
